What owners and members can do

Updated 25 Oct 2026

Everyone who signs in to your RateMate portal is either an Owner or a Member. The role decides what they can open. It belongs to the person's place on your business, so the same login can be an owner of one business and a member of another.

What a member can do

A member handles the everyday work:

  • Customers. Add and edit customers, and send feedback requests.
  • Feedback & alerts. Read responses and resolve low-score alerts.

Under Manage (called Settings on a computer), a member sees Account and nothing else. A note there explains that team, billing, message templates and business settings are managed by the owner.

What only an owner can do

An owner can do everything a member can, plus:

  • Team members. Invite people and change their roles.
  • Billing & plan. Change plan, buy top-ups and cancel.
  • Message templates. Edit the WhatsApp and SMS templates.
  • Privacy. Erase a customer's data, export your data and close the account.
  • Business settings. The rating page and your business details, and the other rows under Manage such as QR code & link.
  • Staff and staff scores. Add staff, see the scoreboard and create personal score links. Members do not see the Staff row or the Staff scores card on Home.

Only owners can do these things. If a member opens one of these pages by its address, they are sent back to Home. See I can't see a setting or button.

Choosing a role

You pick the role when you invite someone. The dialog lists what each role can do as you switch between them. To change it later, open the person under Team members and use the Role drop-down. Making someone an owner asks you to confirm first, with Make owner.

A business always keeps one owner

RateMate will not let you remove or demote the last owner, because nobody could then manage billing or the team. If you try, you see "A business must always keep at least one owner".

You also cannot change your own role or remove yourself from the Team members page. It tells you to ask another owner. To step back, make someone else an owner first, then ask them to change your role.

Good to know

  • Members can still tag who did a job when they send a request. See Tag who did the job.
  • Giving people their own logins needs the Team plan. Staff, the people who do the jobs, never need a login. See Add and manage staff.
